With profound sadness, we announce that Darlene Ann Storbakken (82) unexpectedly passed into the arms of the Lord at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids on March 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Darlene was born on August 1, 1942, to Eddie and Hazel Simonson in Veblen, South Dakota. She attended school in her hometown of New Effington, SD, where she met her lifelong love, Carlyle Storbakken. The two were united in marriage October 28, 1961, which flourished for more than six remarkable decades.
Darlene and Carlyle created a warm and loving home in Osseo, MN, where they raised their three beloved children: Sharri, Jeffrey, and Michael. With fond memories of her childhood pet, Duffy, their home was always filled with the joy of many four-legged, furry companions over the years: Mittens, Rusty, Roscoe, Blaze, Stormy and Nova.
While dedicating herself to her family, Darlene built an impressive professional career in various capacities, including Sentry Insurance Agency and Lindy’s Greenhouse in Maple Grove, MN. Most notable was her 32-year long career as an Executive Assistant for Target Corporation, where she held the title for fastest typist until her retirement in 2008. Her exceptional typing skills extended beyond work, as she helped her grandchildren perfect their college essays. Throughout her career, she truly valued the friendships she formed with her Target coworkers and treasured their regular “girls’ days” and enriching activities, including taking a Spanish class together.
Darlene is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Carlyle Storbakken; her sons: Jeffrey (Julie) Storbakken and Michael (Melissa) Storbakken; her four grandchildren: Justin Laska and Jana Laska, Jeremy Storbakken and Jemma (Johnathan) Hernandez; her eight great grandchildren: Ausha, Tyson, Brianna, Jaianna, Shianne, Mya, Laila, and Mateo; and her five great-great grandchildren: Michaela, Nahla, Loyalty, Legacy, and Tavian (TJ).
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Hazel Simonson; her dear sister, Donna and nephew, Darell; her beloved daughter, Sharri Storbakken; and her faithful furry companions: Duffy, Mittens, Rusty, Roscoe, and Blaze, who now reunite with her in eternal peace.
Despite facing life’s many challenges and triumphs, she never stopped smiling and gracing others with her infectious laugh. She taught everyone who knew her about the power of unconditional love and to find positivity in all situations. She instilled in her children and grandchildren a love for animals and always made special time for the fur members of the family. And no matter where you go, always wear red lipstick, which was a small gesture that embodied her lively spirit. She will be profoundly missed by all who were blessed to know her as family or friend.
A Celebration of Life honoring Darlene will be held April 3, 2025, at 11 AM at Advent Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, MN, with visitation starting at 10 AM. Burial will take place at a later time.
