Evelyn “Evie” Hilda Heikkila (Yoki), age 89, formerly of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away at her residence in St. Paul on September 3, 2020.
She was born May 14, 1931, in Osage, Minnesota, to Jalmer and Hilda (Peterson) Yoki, the oldest of six siblings raised on the family farm. Evie was a 1949 graduate of Frazee High School. She married Vernon Charles Heikkila on September 5, 1953, in Pickerel Lake, Minnesota, and over their 37 years together lived in Hibbing, St. Paul, Duluth, and Silver Bay, Minnesota, where they raised five children.With God’s strength, Evie was an unwavering caregiver and a gracious example of faith to her family and friends even as her physical abilities declined and the pandemic limited her contact with loved ones.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vern; brothers, Mahlon and Alden; and sister, Karen.
Evie is survived by sisters, Donna Kovala and Elaine Hyland (John); daughters, Lori Bradshaw (Tim), Mary Sands (Scott), and Lisa Himes (Adam); sons, Steve (Kim) and Jay (Marcie); 15 grandchildren; 11 nieces and nephews; and a host of brothers and sisters in faith.

Evans-Nordby funeral chapel in Osseo, MN handled my husband’s cremation and Celebration of Life service in July of 2023. I can’t say enough positive things about all aspects of my interactions with them. They reached out to help every step of the way—from planning the Celebration of Life service, the service itself, and after care contact. Brittney was the person I primarily worked with. She was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, organized, and had great communication skills, which greatly helped in reducing my stress level. I plan to contact Evans-Nordby soon to pre-plan my own final arrangements.
