Gerald C. Scherber
March 8, 1935 - January 31, 2025
Gerald C. Scherber, 89, passed on January 31, 2025. Jerry was the oldest of four children of Cyril and Bernadine (Trombley), born on March 08,1935 in Dayton, MN. Jerry was baptized in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, served as a long time Altar boy and was one of the longest attending parishioners of the church. He graduated Osseo High School in 1953 where he played football and basketball. Jerry met his bride-to-be Mary (Berning) at a dance hall in St. Michael, and they were united in marriage in January 1955. The newlyweds lived in Olympia, WA while Jerry was stationed at Fort Lewis for his military service. Jerry and Mary celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Jerry and Mary raised 4 children on the 1859 Trombley-Scherber family homestead back in Dayton, MN. Jerry worked as a land surveyor and crew chief for the State of MN and Hennepin County, and he retired after 35 years from the job he loved. He worked on many county projects that changed roadways and parkways. Jerry took great pride in his work, and enjoyed every challenge. Jerry played softball on many different leagues, including a kitten ball couples team with Mary. Jerry was Scout Master for Troop 334 for several years and made many Scout and family trips into the BWCA. Jerry was an avid Black Powder enthusiast and an expert shot with musket on cross-sticks. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, feeding the yard critters, and “sitting on the sunny side of the barn.”
Jerry and Mary traveled by VW Beetle and Ford vans through much of the southwest and western states. They especially enjoyed an Alaskan cruise, Abaco, Bahamas and their 40th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii.
Jerry accomplished almost 15 years of sobriety at the end of his life. He will be remembered by his family with love, and as a man that appreciated solving a difficult problem, who could repair most any mechanical issue, and who cherished his rural upbringing.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill; brothers-in-law, Russel Bistodeau and Jim Deane; and son, Timothy. Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Michael (Julie), Kathleen (Joe) Thibault, and Patrick, and daughter in-law, Pamela; grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, David, Mallory, Jacob, Erik and Kathryn; great grandchildren, Dakota, Jordyn, Liam, Madilyn, Blakley, and Cooper. Jerry is also survived by siblings, Joyce Deane, Gordon (Sally); his Berning family-in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.
