Mary C. Scherber

Mary C. Scherber
October 8, 1936 - March 10, 2025
Scherber, Mary C. 88, passed on March 10, 2025, at J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice. Mary was born in her parent's home October 08,1936 in St Michael, MN to Herbert and Martha (Lenneman) Berning. She was the eldest of four children and Mary maintained a close bond with her siblings throughout her life, especially with her sister, Tres. Mary was raised by hard-working farmers along the Crow River, located next to Berning’s Mill, which became part of the Crow-Hasson Park Reserve. Her family fostered in Mary a life deeply rooted in the Catholic faith.
Mary graduated from St Michael Catholic School in 1954. When Mary started school, she spoke only German; she often reminisced about how strict the nuns were about learning to speak English. Mary met her husband-to-be, Jerry Scherber, at a dance and they were married 70 years this past January. Mary and Jerry raised four children together on the Trombley-Scherber homestead in Dayton, MN. Mary was a legendary cook. She took intense pleasure in preparing delicious meals, especially the huge yearly holiday meals for both sides of her family. Mary was a proud and busy homemaker, gardener of anything that grew in soil, and she kept a well-organized and tidy home. Mary instilled in her children the value of doing their absolute best when attempting any chore.
Mary earned a degree in Medical Records Technology, this profession suited Mary’s careful attention to detail well. She was an exceptional and valued employee at Friendship Village of Bloomington and later in her career at a physician’s office in Rogers; each facility was sorry to lose Mary’s cheerful presence and excellent skills when she retired.
Mary loved to read and was a faithful patron of the public library system. She kept her mind sharp completing crossword puzzles and playing along on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Mary was an avid bowler for many years. Mary and Jerry traveled together throughout the United States, paddled and portaged many miles in the BWCA, learned to square dance and especially enjoyed sunny days pan fishing. Mary loved her grandchildren and was most content when snuggling while reading to them.
Mary faced many difficult health issues that she determinedly fought through to regain her independence. She faced each rehabilitation stay with grace and grit. Mary will be missed terribly by all who knew her and will be remembered always with love.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, son, Timothy, parents, brothers-in-law, Bill Scherber, Russel Bistodeau and Jim Deane. Mary is survived by her children Michael (Julie), Kathleen (Joseph) Thibault and Patrick, daughter-in-law Pamela, grandchildren Matthew, Megan, David, Mallory, Jacob, Erik and Kathryn; great grandchildren Dakota, Jordyn, Liam, Madilyn, Blakley, and Cooper; siblings Norm (Doreen), Theresa Bistodeau, and Dave (Sandy) many nieces and nephews, and Scherber in-laws Joyce Deane and Gordon (Sally).
